Heavy-duty fencing, slatted screens & Rolawn turfing.

Winter gales flatten timber-post fences across Stockport every year. We set reinforced concrete posts 600mm into concrete, hang gates that close on their own, and lay new lawns on a free-draining sandy topsoil so they stay green and level.

01 · WHY FENCES BLOW DOWN

It is the posts that fail, not the panels.

A 1.8m fence panel catches the wind like a sail. If the post is a timber stake rotting at ground level, the whole run goes over in the first big storm.

Timber posts on a metal spike

  • ✗Rot at the point where wood meets wet soil, often within 8–10 years.
  • ✗Panels sit on the soil, so their bottom rail rots too.
  • ✗Spikes rock loose in soft clay after a wet winter.
  • ✗One leaning post drags its neighbours down with it.

Wet-cast reinforced concrete posts

  • ✓Concrete cast around steel bars: they do not rot, warp or snap.
  • ✓Set 600mm deep in a concrete footing, plumb to the laser line.
  • ✓Concrete gravel boards keep the timber panels off the soil.
  • ✓Panels slide out of the slotted posts if one ever needs replacing.
02 · FENCE & GATE PRICES

What a new boundary costs, per metre.

A typical 20m back-garden boundary in concrete-post fencing is 20 × £130 = £2,600 all-in, with the old fence taken away.

03 · REAL OR ARTIFICIAL?

A real lawn or artificial grass: both done the long-lasting way.

Real turf (£24/m²). We use Rolawn Medallion, a hard-wearing, fine-leaved turf grown in Yorkshire, delivered the day it is cut. It goes onto a 70/30 sandy topsoil (70% washed sand, 30% soil) that lets rain through instead of sitting on the clay.

Pet-safe artificial grass (£72/m²). Good for shady corners and busy dogs. We dig out the soil and lay a compacted, permeable granite-dust base, so rain and rinse water drain straight through and nothing pools or smells.

If the lawn is waterlogged, real or artificial, the ground underneath needs draining first. See our lawn drainage page (drainage and new turf together is £38/m²).

04 · HOW WE LAY A NEW LAWN

Five steps from tired grass to a level lawn.

  1. Strip and clear

Old turf, weeds and stones are lifted and taken away, not buried to rot under the new lawn.

  2. Rotavate

We break up the compacted clay to about 150mm deep so roots can get down into it.

  3. Dress with 70/30 sandy topsoil

A 75–100mm layer of screened sandy topsoil, raked in so water drains away from the surface.

  4. Laser-level and firm

Graded to an even fall away from the house, then firmed by foot so there are no soft spots to sink later.

  5. Lay, roll and water

Rolawn Medallion laid in staggered rows, rolled and watered in. You get a simple care card for the first six weeks.

06 · QUESTIONS

Fences, gates & lawns

Which fence is mine, and which is my neighbour’s?+
Your title deeds often show it with a small “T” mark on the boundary line. If it is unclear or shared, we are happy to speak to your neighbour with you before we start, and we always put the smooth face of the panels outwards unless you agree otherwise.
Will concrete posts look harsh?+
They are a smooth mid-grey and soon disappear behind planting. If you prefer, we can paint posts and panels together in a dark fence stain, or use anthracite steel posts with cedar slats for a more modern look.
Can you lay turf in winter?+
Yes, any time the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Turf laid in autumn and winter actually needs less watering. We will not lay onto frozen soil; we would rather move your date by a few days.
Is artificial grass all right for dogs?+
Yes. The granite-dust base is permeable, so it can be hosed down and the water drains through. We use a pet-safe grass with a backing that lets liquid pass straight through, and can add an odour-control sand infill.
